Fly Season Prep: When Flies Are Worst and What to Do About It

By the time you notice flies are bad, they've been building for weeks. That's the thing about fly season — the visible problem is always lagging behind the actual one. You're not watching flies appear. You're watching the third or fourth generation of a population that's been reproducing since it warmed up.
Getting ahead of it means understanding when fly season actually starts, what drives the worst pressure, and what to have in place before you need it.
When Does Fly Season Start?
The short answer: earlier than most people think, and it varies by region.
House flies become active when temperatures consistently stay above 60°F. They don't breed well below that threshold, and reproduction slows significantly as temperatures drop in fall. But the population you're dealing with in July started as eggs laid in April or May — sometimes earlier in warm-weather states.
General regional timeline:
- Southern states (FL, TX, LA, AZ): Fly season can run nearly year-round, with peak pressure from March through October. Some coastal and low-elevation areas never fully clear.
- Mid-Atlantic and Southeast (NC, VA, TN, GA): Peaks from May through September. Activity often starts in late March.
- Midwest and Plains: June through August are the worst months. Hot summers with livestock and grain storage create ideal conditions.
- Northeast (including New England): Peak season runs June through August. Cooler shoulder months see lower but still meaningful pressure, especially near farms.
- Pacific Coast: Milder temperatures mean fly season stretches longer but peaks are often less intense than inland areas.
If you're in a livestock area — regardless of region — expect your fly pressure to run about 4–6 weeks longer than your neighbors without animals, since manure management extends the breeding season even as ambient temperatures drop.
What Makes Some Years Worse Than Others
Fly populations don't just track temperature. A few other variables drive unusually bad seasons:
Warm, wet springs. Moisture accelerates breeding in compost, manure, and decaying organic matter. A wet April followed by a warm May is a reliable recipe for an earlier and more intense fly season.
Mild winters. Flies overwinter as pupae in protected areas — inside walls, under debris, in manure piles. A mild winter kills fewer of them and the spring population starts from a higher baseline.
Drought conditions. Counterintuitively, late-summer drought can push flies toward water and food sources near buildings, concentrating them in places you'd prefer they weren't.
Livestock density and management. On farms, the single biggest driver of fly pressure isn't weather — it's manure management. Operations that clean frequently and compost hot have dramatically lower fly populations than similar-sized operations that don't.
How to Get Ahead of It
Six to eight weeks before peak season:
- Clean up overwintering sites. Flies pupate in debris, leaf piles, under structures, and in manure. Removing these before they hatch breaks the first generation.
- Inspect and repair screens and door seals. Gaps that didn't matter in winter matter a lot in June.
- Order traps early. If you wait until flies are already bad, you're catching up. Put traps out before peak season to intercept the early population.
At the start of peak season:
- Deploy outdoor bait traps. Place them away from gathering areas — near compost, trash, barns, or along fence lines — so they're working on the outdoor population before it migrates inside.
- Set up a manure or compost management routine if you have livestock. Daily or every-other-day removal during peak months makes a measurable difference in fly pressure over the following weeks.
- Start monitoring sticky traps indoors to catch early intrusion before it becomes an infestation.
During peak season:
- Replace bait traps every 30 days or when they fill — whichever comes first. A full trap that's left up isn't catching anything new.
- Check drain areas, floor drains, and wet spots. These become breeding sites during the season regardless of how well you controlled outdoor pressure.
- Keep compost piles turned frequently. A hot pile doesn't breed flies. A cold, neglected one does.
At the end of season:
- Don't pull traps too early. Fly pressure often spikes in September as insects look for warm places to overwinter. A trap in place through October catches the generation that would otherwise pupate nearby and restart next year's population.
- Use fall as a time to do structural improvements — better door seals, mesh screening, grease trap cleaning — when you have time to do it properly.
The Trap Timing Question
A common mistake is treating fly traps like smoke detectors — set it up once and forget about it. Bait traps have roughly a 30-day effective window. After that, the attractant is exhausted and the full trap isn't pulling in new flies. Replacing on schedule matters.

Fly populations grow exponentially, not linearly. One fly becoming 500 becomes hundreds of thousands within weeks if conditions are right. Early season control — when the population is small — is dramatically more efficient than trying to manage a peak-season explosion.
